The lungs are amazing structures that allow your body to bring in oxygen and release carbon dioxide. This exchange is the basis for a number of other processes in your body.   1. Stop smoking: Because it decreases the size of your lungs and develops a black pigmentation and smoke causes inflammation to the tissue within the lungs.

  2. Exercise and physical activities: An exercise routine that incorporates aerobic activity can help improve your lung capacity. Aerobic exercises include: walking, running, cycling (whether outdoors or indoors), swimming, dancing or dance-inspired workouts such as Zumba, boxing, sports such as tennis.

  3. Eat a lung healthy diet: Your diet can affect your lung health in a variety of ways. Eating vitamin-D rich foods may improve your lung health. Certain foods and drinks contain anti-inflammatory antioxidants. Reducing airway inflammation can help you breathe easier and antioxidants can help. Try green tea, ginger tea, fortified food and  other anti-inflammatory options include berries, broccoli, turmeric, pineapple, carrots, spinach and dark chocolate etc. You can also choose healthy fats that’s lower in carbohydrates and higher in healthy fats. Metabolizing carbohydrates produces more carbon dioxide and uses more oxygen than metabolizing fats.

  1. Monitor the quality of Air that you are breathing: Start cleansing your lungs by improving the quality of the air in your home. You can purchase an air purifier that can be placed in individual rooms. You can also invest in a household-wide purifier. Along with getting an air purifier, you should change all of the filters in your home and clean all of the vents, such as those in the bathroom or your air conditioning or heating vents.

  2. Eliminate artificial scents: You may think that you’re helping the air in your home by making it smell nice with air fresheners, candles, or those popular wax candle warmers. However, these fragrances are often full of harmful chemicals that can irritate your lungs. Even household cleaners can act as irritants, so check your cupboards and replace your cleaners with all-natural products if possible.

  3. Practice breathing exercises: Different types of pranayama such as  quiet breathing, deep breathing, Fast Breathing. tribandha and pranayama, nadi shuddhi pranayama or anuloma - viloma (alternate nostril breathing - I), anuloma - Viloma (alternate nostril breathing - II), surya nadi bhedana pranayama (right nostril breathing), ujjayi pranayama etc. Certain breathing exercises can improve lung function, especially for individuals who currently smoke, who’ve smoked in the past, or who have lung damage from a chronic lung disease. There are also tools that can help you practice your breathing, such as a spirometer. This kind of device is often used after surgery to help with the recovery process. Other breathing exercises don’t require the use of assistive devices. These techniques include: pursed lip breathing, belly breathing, which is also known as diaphragmatic breathing.

  4. Practice percussion: Percussion, or chest percussion, is a technique that can help drain fluid from the lungs. It involves having you lie down with your head lowered and tapping lightly on your back, working from top to bottom. It’s often combined with postural drainage, a technique where you change your body’s position so that it’s easier for fluid to move out of the lungs. You may be on your side, stomach, or back. Many people with cystic fibrosis or pneumonia use percussion and postural drainage. The individual’s back is tapped firmly with cupped hands, which loosens secretions. The tipped position helps the secretions move up and out of the lungs.

SURYA NAMASKAR ( HASTAUTTANASANA-2)

 Hasta uttanasana (Raised arms pose- 2)

Breathing in, lift the arms up and back, keeping the biceps close to the ears. In this pose, the effort is to stretch the whole body up from the heels to the tips of the fingers. It is the 2nd position of surya namaskara. Physically its awareness will be on the throat, on the stretch of the abdomen and expansion of the lungs. Spiritually its awareness will be on Vishuddhi Chakra where sixteen petals of blue lotus are visualized. It is also called the centre of purification. Its element is ether or akasha or space. Its mantra is "om raviyay namah."Its beeja  mantra is H-a-a-a-M. 

Benefits: It stimulates Thyroid and Parathyroid glands and plays an important role in growth of the child's body. It digests calcium and phosphorus and eliminates toxins. It also controls heat of the body and thus maintains health. Underworking gives dullness, weakness, twisting of muscles, rickets, convulsions etc. Over working will give bulging  eyes, Adam's apple and tendency to become a bully.                                                          If this gland does not function properly after puberty it may give calcification-stone. It helps to build human qualities  such as  affection, love, high thinking, concentration, self control, balanced temperament, purity of heart and unselfishness.The bulging place of palm and sole below thumb should be pressed twice a day for two minutes in a pumping way to          stimulate vishuddhi chakra.

Stand at the edge of your mat, keep your feet together and balance your weight equally on both the feet. Expand your chest and relax your shoulders. As you breathe in, lift both arms up from the sides, and as you exhale, bring your palms together in front of the chest in prayer position.

    It is the first position of surya namaskara. Physically its awareness will be on the chest area and spiritually on anahata chakra. It is the centre of anahata nada. Its associated element is air and twelve petals of green or pink lotus are visualized on this chakra on a spiritual level. It's mantra is "om mitraya namah" and the bija mantra is  y-a-m.    

Benefits: It stimulates Thymus gland works  as a godmother for a child against any disease. Once the body is fully developed the gland  shrinks and stops its activities. The pressure should be given on the palm and sole below one centimetre of  ring and middle finger twice a day for two minutes in a pumping way. Heart chest, lungs related problems and loneliness, depression, insecurity; all these problems are controlled by this chakra. All the respiratory and circulatory systems are controlled by it. For meditation on anahata chakra a tiny bright flame is visualized and an unconditional love flows within a person.  

Mudra of Anahat Chakra:                      It is apana vayu mudra also called mrit sanjeevani mudra in which the index finger touches the base of thumb and tip of the ring and middle finger touches the tip of thumb and little finger is extended. It gives strength to the heart  and regulates palpitation. It also normalizes blood pressure, gastric trouble, excretory system and increases confidence in a person. It also works during emergencies or chest pain. This mudra is performed to sit in any meditational asana with head and spine straight for 15 to 30 minutes concentrating on anahata chakra.
